The Centre for Foundation & General Studies (CFGS), Kuala Lumpur University of Science and Technology (KLUST), successfully conducted KLUSTCoast Heroes @ Bagan Lalang, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative in collaboration with Majlis Perbandaran Sepang (MPS) on 7 September 2026. The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness and community responsibility through hands-on coastal conservation.
The initiative brought together 34 students from diverse academic backgrounds, including Foundation, Intensive English Programme (IEP), Bachelor and Postgraduate programmes, together with academic staff from CFGS. The project was led by Ts. Dr. Audi Majdan Kamarul Bahrain, with the assistance of Ms Nalinah, Mr Fadzly, Madam Lee Su Yee, Madam Wan Nurhasila, Ms Syuhada and Mr Rizal.
This diverse participation reflected KLUST’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for students from different backgrounds to learn, collaborate and contribute to the wider community.
The team arrived at Bagan Lalang at around 9.30 a.m., following breakfast at the nearby food court. A comprehensive safety briefing was delivered by Ts. Dr. Audi before the volunteers commenced their cleaning activities.
Working across an estimated 850-metre stretch from the edge of Gold Coast Sepang Resort to the Bagan Lalang mangrove forest boundary, volunteers took advantage of the very low tide to carefully reach areas further out along the beach that would normally be inaccessible.
From morning until 12.30 p.m., the team collected an impressive 131.3 kg of waste, including plastic packaging, food waste, cigarette butts and fishing nets. The volunteers even discovered a discarded car frame partially buried in the low-tide area, which was unfortunately beyond the scope of the team to remove.
Following the cleaning activity, participants were provided with lunch before taking time to pray, rest, enjoy the surroundings and engage in informal sightseeing. The day concluded with group photographs showcasing the volunteers alongside the collected waste, symbolising the collective achievement of the KLUSTCoast Heroes team.
Beyond cleaning the beach, the initiative fostered environmental awareness, teamwork, community responsibility and a stronger appreciation for preserving Malaysia’s coastal ecosystems. More than simply removing rubbish, the programme provided students with a valuable learning experience beyond the classroom.
It was truly a collective effort that demonstrated how small actions, when united, can create a meaningful impact. We thank Majlis Perbandaran Sepang once more for giving us the opportunity to be part of the community in helping to preserve the environment.
