KLUST and Sudanese Embassy explore opportunities for education cooperation, student development and industry-academia collaboration
KUALA LUMPUR, 25 September 2026 — His Excellency Hassan Abdul Salam Omar, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Sudan to Malaysia, led a delegation from the Embassy of Sudan on a visit to Kuala Lumpur University of Science and Technology (KLUST).
Dr Elwalid El-Sayed Mohamed Ali Bashir, Deputy Ambassador of Sudan to Malaysia, accompanied the delegation. The visit focused on education cooperation, international student development, and industry-academia collaboration, with both parties exploring opportunities to strengthen practical cooperation between Sudan’s education sector and KLUST.
Sudan is located in northeastern Africa along the Red Sea and is the third-largest country in Africa by land area, with a population of more than 50 million. More than 7,000 Sudanese students are currently studying in Malaysia, including 308 Sudanese students enrolled at KLUST. This growing student community provides a strong foundation for strengthening educational and people-to-people ties between Sudan and Malaysia.
KLUST highlights industry-academia integration and international talent development
Professor Chen Xiaoyun, Chairman of the KLUST Board of Governors, briefed the delegation on the university’s development and highlighted the progress of its Four Industry Academies International Alliance.
The four key areas are new energy vehicles, cross-border e-commerce, AI engineering technology, and digital creativity. Professor Chen also outlined KLUST’s approach to industry-academia integration and its focus on developing internationally oriented talent.
Currently, 308 Sudanese students are pursuing their studies at KLUST. The students have demonstrated stable academic progress and a high level of satisfaction with their university experience.
Ambassador Hassan Abdul Salam Omar expressed his appreciation for the university’s care and support for Sudanese students. He also recognised KLUST’s industry-focused approach through its four industry academies and expressed interest in exploring further cooperation in student progression, youth intercultural exchange and artificial intelligence.
The Sudanese Embassy has prepared a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), with both parties looking forward to using the proposed framework to advance practical cooperation.
Sudanese Graduates Festival to provide platform for engagement
The Embassy also introduced the upcoming Sudanese Graduates Festival, scheduled to take place between November 2026 and January 2027.
The festival is expected to feature an education exhibition, sporting events, dedicated career and recruitment activities, and a cultural night. Overseas universities that host Sudanese international students are expected to be invited to participate, with KLUST also invited to showcase its programmes and initiatives.
During the visit, Ambassador Hassan Abdul Salam Omar formally invited Professor Chen Xiaoyun to lead a KLUST delegation on a future visit to Sudan, with the aim of strengthening two-way engagement and expanding educational cooperation between both sides.
Professor Chen expressed his appreciation for the delegation’s visit and the invitation. He highlighted Sudanese students at KLUST as an important link between the university and Sudan, and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to continuously improving its teaching and student support services.
He added that KLUST would leverage its four industry academies to develop more technology and management professionals equipped to contribute to Sudan’s local development needs. The university will also study the draft MOU and actively explore opportunities to participate in the Sudanese Graduates Festival.
Professor Chen further expressed KLUST’s intention to organise a future visit to Sudan, where the university could explore broader cooperation in areas including joint talent development, technology and industry exchange.
Strengthening education ties between KLUST and Sudan
The visit further strengthened KLUST’s international engagement and established another channel for dialogue between the university and Sudan’s education community.
Both parties agreed to use the meeting as a starting point for advancing practical cooperation, with a focus on international student development and stronger connections between industry and education resources.
Through these efforts, KLUST and its Sudanese partners aim to build deeper educational ties and open new opportunities for collaboration in talent development, education, and industry, strengthening the relationship between KLUST and Sudan’s education sector.
