Kuala Lumpur University of Science and Technology (KLUST) has appointed Dato’ Chua Heok Wee as Professor of Practice, strengthening the University’s connection with industry and creating opportunities to bring practical expertise in engineering, technology, business and digital transformation into the academic environment. The appointment reflects KLUST’s continued emphasis on connecting academic learning with industry practice and developing graduates who are equipped to apply knowledge in real-world settings.
Dato’ Chua currently serves as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Muar Ban Lee Group Berhad and SWS. With more than three decades of hands-on experience, he has progressed from working as a site supervisor and project manager to senior corporate leadership. His experience spans engineering, technology-driven business operations, and international markets.
A significant part of his professional work has focused on artificial intelligence, automation, and digital transformation. He has advanced the adoption of AI and automation systems to support industrial intelligence, improve operational efficiency and strengthen reliability. His work also encompasses quality management, corporate governance and sustainable development, particularly in environmental engineering.
Speaking at the appointment, Dato’ Chua shared his belief in the enduring importance of education: “No matter how difficult the circumstances, education should never be neglected.” For him, education is not only about acquiring knowledge, but about creating opportunities for individuals and contributing to the development of families and society.
As Professor of Practice, Dato’ Chua expressed his intention to contribute his experience in engineering, technology, industry, international cooperation and professional organisations to the University. He highlighted the importance of connecting the classroom with industry, academic knowledge with practical application, and local education with international opportunities.
He also emphasised the evolving role of technology and AI in industry, and the importance of preparing students to not only acquire knowledge but apply it in practical settings and create value. His industry experience in AI-driven automation and technology transformation provides an additional perspective for KLUST as the University continues to strengthen its focus on technology and industry-integrated education.
Beyond his corporate work, Dato’ Chua has been actively involved in talent development, industry knowledge sharing and community initiatives. His contributions include support for education and research, as well as wider efforts to strengthen professional and industry development.
